High energy prices are a top concern for households – but most are paying more than they should be.
In the ongoing cost of living crisis, rising energy bills have become the norm. At the same time, energy pricing is becoming increasingly confusing and complex, and retailers are exploiting this to get away with charging people exorbitant prices.
According to the ACCC, more than 80 per cent of Australian households in the National Electricity Network (NEM) are being slugged with a ‘loyalty penalty’ on their energy bills. It also found that, on average, households on offers which are more than a year old are paying $238 more per year – and the older the offer, the worse this ‘loyalty penalty’ gets.
For those of us who have tried to find a better deal, the task of comparing potentially hundreds of alternative offers from the energy retailers can be overwhelming. We all should be able to switch on the lights without worrying if we’ll be able to afford the bill. It shouldn’t be this hard to know if you’re getting ripped off.
That’s why CHOICE is shining a light on the power imbalance between consumers and energy retailers, and calling for change to ensure everyone has access to fair and affordable energy.
